Kalin and Myles: Bland Hip-Hop for the Masses

Kalin and Myles is an American hip hop and pop duo from the San Francisco Bay area. The duo consists of Kalin White and Myles Parrish. They have been producing music since September of 2013, and since then their popularity has been attributed to social media. Their EP Chasing Dreams landed them the number 6 spot on the Rap Albums chart in June of 2014.  Duos are not too common in a media platform that revolves around single artists and bands, so I assumed at first that they would bring something unique to the table. Duos in hip hop are even less common, and it seemed Kalin and Myles would carve a niche in the music business. Unfortunately, I was unimpressed with their playlist overall.

I listened to their single “Trampoline,” released in December of 2014. Disappointing would be an understatement for how I would describe the song. Their lyrics describe the wonderful feelings evoked when an attractive girl shakes her stuff – and that’s about as deep as the song gets. It’s a party song, essentially – something to dance to when you need a song to dance to. Though I do admit that the song is catchy, it reflects the group’s hip hop and rap genre, and captures the free spirit of an American teenager.

The duo has potential, but their presence as of yet has been underwhelming. The group needs to more openly embrace its genre and produce songs that have a little more substance.  Though they are still beginning their career, the American listeners are waiting for a hit. And I’m not so sure they have produced one yet. 2.5/5
